Scale Models for Trade Shows – Oldcastle Water Drainage System

This model is created to demonstrate a new water drainage system. As the water flows through the pipe, vortexes are created which allow waste materials and trash to be collected at the bottom. This is a fairly complex system so LED lighting was installed to trace the water flow through the pipes. Buttons on the back allowed salesmen to guide their clients through and interesting water flow demonstration. This model draws attention to the booth and provides an attractive demonstration at all their trade shows. The model is large enough so that salesmen can point out all the features and demonstrate the ease of collecting gravel or garbage and cleaning out the system.

Scale Models for Museums – Ice Core

The great thing about being a model maker is that you never know what challenges the next project will bring. I live in Boulder CO, the location of NCAR, UCAR, NOAA, NIST and many other federal letters. The National Center for Atmospheric Research has offices in one the most distinguished (architect I. M. Pei) buildings in my town. Overlooking Boulder, sitting on a mesa against a backdrop of the dramatic mountains NCAR is a serious research facility dealing with the worlds climate. The also house a newly revised visitors center with many interactive and informational displays. We were commissioned by NCAR to construct a model of an ice core to be illuminated and placed in this visitors center.

ICE CORE: These are cylinders of ice mined in various locations from Greenland to the Arctic. The deeper the core sample the farther back in time the ice was formed. The bubbles in the ice still contain the atmospheric elements that were present during that ancient time to the core becomes a record of how our atmosphere formed and has evolved over the millennia.

In learning about the ice cores we visited the Denver Federal Center were many cores are brought for study. This is a lab that is kept at – 27 degrees Fahrenheit. The scientist work all day wearing protective clothing to keep from freezing. I asked a lot of questions and learned a lot about ice cores and how they look.

Building the models. We ended up building two identical full sized cores that matched a section of an actual ice core for scientific accuracy. Using clear acrylic tubes I poured clear resin in over 120 layers to match the image. I used experimented enough to create a chart showing how much stirring, how much resting and how much gel time was needed to match all the different bubble densities. A relatively clear layer along with a relatively cloudy layer of bubbles represents one year of ice build up. It took several weeks of pouring and curing the resin to get the core models built. One of them is now on display in the visitors center and has become a popular draw for tourists. The second one is used in the classroom and in scientific discussions about the cores themselves.

Biomet is a medical device company that specializes in providing doctors with surgical equipment for spine injuries. The make a lot of equipment in different categories and needed a way to easily and professionally display the pieces at their many trade shows. We designed and created these circular display pucks that are each custom built to hold all of these strange shapes while allowing the parts to easily be removed and replaced. They attend many trade shows at a time so we created five pucks in each design for use all over the country.

Parasolil

Every model we build is unique to our client and designed around their needs. Working closely with the artistic director of Parasoleil we created a display that helped win them the best booth award when it was first shown.

Parasoleil has a unique niche in the architectural supply market. They use brass and steel sheets cut with very specific designs. These sheets become awning and screens that cast comforting light and shadow patterns on patios and walls. In order to show off the many uses for their product, we created a model with an white architectural backdrop. Then models of their product were placed around the backdrop representing walls, railings, canopies, and decorative features. The clients visiting the show could take lights and immediately cast shadows onto the white background. The demonstration not only showed the many places the product could be used, but also showed the coolness and comfort of the shadows it produced.

This simple elegant model was a huge hit at the architectural supply show and generated the interest and sales that the company needed. Not every display has to be elaborate and expensive in order to be effective.

Lockheed Martin Telescope

We have done many models for Lockheed Martin. Unfortunately most of them are under tight non-disclosure agreements. This telescope model though is for public viewing and I am allowed to share these images. I build models for many products of which I have little knowledge starting out. The science behind this telescope is quite complex so I only have a rudimentary understanding. If I get something wrong in this article please let me know.

The concept of this system for exploring the universe is unique. By building three 10′ reflectors and positioning them very carefully and having them linked together electronically, this system cam mimic the capacity of a much larger mirror without the exceptional cost.

We bid on several versions of this model. The most elaborate include domes that opened and closed along with programmed movements along the three tracks. The reality was that the budget did not justify these electronic add-ons. We work with our client and the realities of their budgets. We modified our bid and created fixed domes with one of them permanently open to reveal the telescope within. I was so looking forward to having a programmable model that worked off of a tablet, but in this case, it was not to be. We did re-build a portion of the model to create a viewport in one of the model buildings to show off the instruments that receive and process the light from the telescopes.

This simpler but elegant model did the trick and has been shipped to different locations including Hawaii to show off the concepts of this technology. We used a combination of 3D printing and direct model making to create these shapes and show off this unique Lockheed Martin site.
