This model is located in the Moose Visitors Center at the entrance to the Grand Tetons. It is a display that can be shown flat on the surface of the stand, or propped up at an angle to make it easy to see and discuss specific features.
Like many of the National Park Service models, this one had to be touchable by the public. The topo model is made from a tough urethane so that it can stand up to the attention of the thousands of visitors a year that come through the center. The highly detailed painting shows all the land and water features as well as the forests, riparian, and other environmental features.
